Jammu, Oct 03:
Amar Ujala Jammu, in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication, Jammu, conducted a stimulating debate competition on its campus today. The event saw enthusiastic participation from students across the English Journalism, Digital Media, and Hindi Journalism departments.
The session began with a warm welcome speech by Dr. Dilip Kumar, Regional Director of IIMC Jammu. He motivated and encouraged students to participate in debates, as it helps build confidence and improve public speaking skills. This was followed by a detailed briefing on the rules and regulations by Mr. Gulshan Kumar, Academic Associate. The competition featured two groups, debating for and against the motion.
The event was graced by special guest, Administrative Head Baljit Kumar and photojournalist Abhishek Baru from Amar Ujala, Jammu.
Others present were Dr. Vinit Utpal, Assistant Professor (Digital Media), Dr. Ravia Gupta, Assistant Professor (English Journalism), Mr. Vishv, Assistant Professor (Digital Media), and Mr. Rajiv Kumar.
The students passionately expressed their views on the future of print media versus digital media. Those in favor of print argued that it remains a trusted source of information, particularly in rural areas, offering distraction-free, focused reading without the threat of fake news. They also emphasized that we are in a period of convergence, rather than a complete digital shift. Conversely, the opposing group highlighted the accessibility and speed of digital platforms, especially audio-visual formats. They noted that news channels and e-newspaper services provided by traditional media outlets make news more accessible in today’s fast-paced world.
After an intense round of debate, the judges announced the results. The third prize was awarded to Netra, the second prize to Mohd Haider, and the first prize to MD Aadil Shamim.
The event was moderated by Himanshi and Prasannta, with technical assistance provided by Rajiv Kumar, Academic Associate.
The event served as a platform for students to showcase their knowledge and critical thinking, and it ended on a high note with participants and faculty alike applauding the spirited discussion.
