Department of Home Science, University of Jammu has been relentlessly trying to take the benefits of its knowledge, expertise and research work to the needy and upto the last mile. As part of such activities, this time the students of Second semester of the department conducted a programme in a very far flung area, several kilometres ahead of Purmandal block in Samba District, with women folk and elderly ladies of villages Badyali and Karteen and school children of Village Deon. The group of students was led by the HOD, Prof. Shashi Manhas. The interactive session with village ladies was to know about their knowledge about the past and recent trends in Child rearing practices, traditional family patterns, morals, ethics, principles of old times and the effects of changes in our traditional family styles. The women were also imparted knowledge on many important things like the need to save girl children, providing them with the same type of treatment as is given to male children and the need to provide them best education. They were told to spread the message that female foeticide is bad for society and country and that people should follow law in this respect.
Later a programme was conducted with the students of Govt. Middle School, Deon in which children were given knowledge about the need for adopting hygienic practices to improve their health, learning skills and the need and importance of education.
