The activists of Civil society for development of Jammu and Kashmir (CSD J& K ) took out a climate march from Maharaja Hari singh park Jammu to Dogra Chowk Jammu on Sunday to spread awareness on climate change & environmental protection. The march was organized by President Civil society for development of Jammu and Kashmir(CSD J&K) Puneet singh jamwal .The activists holding placards explained to passers-by on the need to cut down greenhouse gases emissions for reversing the effects of climate change ,
Many of the banners, posters reflect a rising sense of frustration and anxiety about inheriting a warming planet with melting ice caps and glaciers that is battered by worsening droughts, floods and storms.
While leading the march Puneet singh jamwal said that “Climate change doesn’t respect borders, climate change will at some point become irreversible,” That’s why we have to do something now.The impacts of higher temperatures, variable precipitation, and extreme weather events have already begun to impact the economic performance of countries and the lives and livelihoods of millions of people.
The organizer of the climate march batted for cycling tracks around the Jammu and Srinagar as now a day’s numbers of bikers can be seen cycling along national highways risking their lives, moreover cycling is also good for health and for our environment as in turn it doesn’t produce any emissions .Puneet singh jamwal also urged Governor Satya pal mailk to set up air quality control panels at different locations of Jammu and Srinagar to make people aware of effects of pollution and make them responsible towards ecology and degenerating air quality.
Puneet singh jamwal further said that from couple of years a thick layer of smog can be seen in and around the Jammu and Srinagar during some time of year thus decreasing visibility and increasing infection among elders and children .The climate of our state is getting badly affected day by day as there is no check on pollutants emitted by industries and vehicles.
He said a thick layer of smog can be seen during evening hours near Bari bharamana area rather it’s also a inhabited area thus posing a threat to localities making them prone to allergies, cancers, asthma , respiratory track diseases and other diseases .
The CSD woman wing vice president Anita chandpuri said that India is among the countries most vulnerable to climate change. It has one of the highest densities of economic activity in the world, and very large numbers of poor people who rely on the natural resource base for their livelihoods, with a high dependence on rainfall. By 2020, pressure on India’s water, air, soil and forests is expected to become the highest in the world
Amit gupta municipal Corporator ward no 19 said that India accounts for 4.5 percent of the world’s greenhouse gases, so it plays a crucial role in combating climate change. And, because of the risks of flooding and high temperatures, perhaps no country has a greater incentive to slow global warming.
