Colonel (Retired) Mahan Singh, Chairman of the District Development Council (DDC) Kathua, accompanied by Keshav Dutta Sharma, Chairman DDC Samba, visited the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) in Samba at the invitation of Dr. Sanjay Khajuria, Head of KVK Samba. The visit aimed to explore advancements in agricultural practices and discuss infrastructural developments in the region.
During their visit to KVK Samba, the Chairpersons toured various sections showcasing innovations, technological applications, modern farming methods, and hybrid crops cultivated at the premier agricultural institute. They commended the efforts of KVK in introducing cutting-edge agricultural and horticultural activities. Both leaders emphasized the importance of raising awareness among farmers about the adoption of technology to enhance productivity. The Chairpersons also participated in a post-budget webinar on agriculture, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, organized by the Union Ministry of Agriculture. The webinar focused on strategies to boost the agricultural sector, aligning with the government’s commitment to support farmers and promote sustainable practices.
In addition to their visit to KVK Samba, Colonel Mahan Singh engaged with Chief Engineer and Executive Engineer of the 69 Border Roads Task Force (BRTF), Project Sampark, to discuss critical infrastructure issues in Kathua district. Key topics included the blacktopping of a 3-kilometer stretch of Dhar Road near the RSD Barrage, which is currently in a dilapidated condition, to ensure safe and efficient transportation. He also highlighted the necessity of implementing road protection measures in areas with sinking grounds in Bhoond Bazar to prevent accidents and maintain connectivity. Additionally, the early commencement of the Sukha Nallah bridge construction on the Basohli-Bani National Highway (NH-44) was discussed to improve regional connectivity and support economic activities.
Colo Mahan Singh further advocated for the inclusion of the 30-kilometer Mahanpur-Basohli road under the jurisdiction of the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF), noting that other major routes in the Basohli-Billawar area are already managed by the Border Roads Organization (BRO). He emphasized that bringing this particular stretch under GREF’s purview would enhance road infrastructure, thereby boosting tourism in the region. To advance this proposal, Colonel Mahan has already written to the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 9 Corps, which operates in the region, urging them to present the case to higher authorities, highlighting both developmental and defense considerations.
Col Mahan expressed appreciation for the Border Roads Organization’s expedited construction efforts on the Bani-Bhadarwah section of the General Reserve Engineer Force (GREF) road, acknowledging the organization’s role in enhancing infrastructure in the region.
The DDC Chairpersons’ visit underscores their dedication to advancing agricultural innovation and infrastructure development in the Jammu, Samba, and Kathua districts. By fostering collaborations with agricultural institutions and addressing infrastructural challenges, they aim to promote sustainable development and improve the quality of life for residents in these regions.
