Domestic violence cases in Jammu region seem to be on the rise as registration of such cases in the Jammu stationed women cell has seen an upward trend during the last few years and in the nearly ending of this year, 1183 complaints were lodged in the Jammu Women Cell. As per the data obtained from the women cell, Jammu, more than 1183 complaints have been lodged by women including the newly married besides the male members also, facing alleged harassment in the hands of their better halves. Complaints are being received on daily basis but many of them are settled on the spot with a compromise between both the parties through counseling, said Arti Thakur, in charge, women cell Jammu. They said that out of these complaints, 1104 were disposed off at the Women Cell only by counselling both the partners and their families, adding, “around 79 cases are still pending and are being handled depending upon their sensitivity.” As per the data received from the Jammu stationed Women Cell, out of the total complaints lodged, FIRs were registered in 20 cases, which are to be settled in the Marital Court and out of them 12 cases have been disposed off. “Our first priority is peaceful settlement between both the parties and for that matter, lot many domestic disputes were being sorted out with the help of counselling,” Arti Thakur, Station House Office, Women Cell Jammu said. She asserted that only those cases, which do not settle down amicably, are registered and referred to the Court for further action. As per the data obtained from the women cell, Jammu, 1073 complaints were received in the previous year 2017 and the highest number of complaints was received in 2016 wherein 1359 complaints were lodged.
