One person has been arrested and two persons, including a sister in charge, detained for allegedly selling a child born to an inmate of a shelter home, run by Mother Teresa-founded Missionaries of Charity, at East Jail road in Ranchi, a police officer said.
Anima Indwar, an employee of Nirmal Hriday, was apprehended based on a complaint filed by Rupa Verma, chairperson of Child Welfare Committee (CWC) Ranchi unit, Kotwali police station officer in charge Shyamanand Mandal said.Nirmal Hriday is the orphanage run by the Missionaries of Charity.
“One person was apprehended yesterday in connection with the shelter home case. Another arrest is also likely. We are looking into the allegations,” Mr. Mandal said on Thursday. In her complaint, Ms. Verma said that a couple from Uttar Pradesh’s Shone Bhadra district approached the CWC after Nirmal Hriday allegedly took away the child it had given them on May 14.The arrest happened yesterday. Shyamanand Madal, head of the Kotwali police station, reports that a case has been opened against Anima Indwar (the employee) and the two nuns according to section 370 of the Indian Penal Code [which punishes those who traffick human beings, ed. ]. Then he adds that “clear evidence was collected against one of the nuns, who could be arrested soon”.The case came to light last week during an inspection by Ranchi’s Child Welfare Committee (CWC). Pratima Tiwari, one of the social workers, told the Indian newspaper that the institute run by the Missionaries of Charity is subject to regular checks. The official explains that the facility is located in Jail Road and “welcomes single mothers who have no other places to give birth. In one of the checks carried out last week, we found out that a baby was gone “.
Suspicious, the social workers questioned the nuns: at the end one of them said that the child was taken away by his mother after she was discharged from the structure. “We contacted the woman – continued Tiwari – who instead told us that the child was not with her.
The couple apparently told Ms. Verma that they paid ?1.2 lakh on May 1 to get the boy’s custody.
Chairperson of Ranchi CWC told PTI , “The U.P.-based family claimed that Anima Indwar, who handed over the child to them on May 14, called them up on July 1 .
