Farooq Shah calls for collective efforts to address vulnerabilities of women, children

Secretary Disaster Management, Rescue, Relief & Rehabilitation (DMRRR), PHE and I&FC, Farooq Ahmad Shah, today stressed on the need for collective efforts to address vulnerabilities of women and children during disasters. Speaking at ongoing three-day state level workshop, ‘Consultation on child-centered emergency preparedness’, he laid stress on collective action of Administration, NGOs and other stakeholders to implement child and women safety measures in general and during the time of disaster in particular. He appreciated the enthusiasm of the participants and encouraged them to take advantage of the opportunities. He also explained the vision of DMRRR and the importance of conducting such workshops to groom officials. While sharing his experience with the participants, Secretary emphasized on keeping the passion alive despite the challenges and hardships to achieve the betterment of the vulnerable part of society especially women, children and other vulnerable groups. The workshop has been organized by J&K SDMA in collaboration with DMA Jammu, NDMA and UNICEF, a. Those present were Emergency Specialist UNICEF, Sarabjit Singh, Xavier Thomas, former Member NDMA, Dr Muzaffar Ahmed, UNICEF, Advisor, besides officers from Divisional Commissioner office Jammu, Additional Deputy Commissioners, Disaster Management Professionals and other Senior Officers from Education, Social Welfare, ICDS, ICPS, PHE, Fire & Emergency Services, Health & Medical Education Departments, and NGOs. In his address, Director Disaster Management and Deputy CEO J&KSDMA, Aamir Ali, said that the intervention of the line departments will help the Government to take effective measures to mainstream child-centred disaster risk section in their development planning. He added that the workshop will prove to be a useful exercise in framing the risk profiling of the Jammu Division with a special focus on the vulnerabilities of Children and women. He also said that the comments, details, data that emerge out as the outcome of the workshop will be updated in the plan for better resilient communities.
