The Bollywood Hungama Style Icons Summit and Awards 2024 was held today, May 2. The second panel discussion was on ‘Style and Showbiz: Perfect Partners or Mutual Beneficiaries?’ and it was attended by Gauahar Khan, Mugdha Godse, Tejasswi Prakash, Shriya Pilgaonkar and Sumeet Vyas. These actors talked about the impact of fashion shown in cinema.Gauahar Khan said, “I believe films, especially in India, are such an integral part of our lives, that you can’t really draw the line on what the impact is going to be in the personal lives of the audience. For example, when Maine Pyar Kiya (1989) was released, weren’t we all wearing a cap that said ‘Friend’? No matter how hideous it looked on our salwar kameez, we still wore it (laughs). Today, we’d be like ‘Oh my God’! But that was the influence the film had.” Gauahar continued, “The low-cut blouse that Madhuri Dixit wore in Hum Aapke Hai Koun (1994) is a trend even today. People request ‘Choli thodi neeche karna’, ‘woh dori laga dena’. Showbiz has such an impact that you can’t really take your eyes away from it.”Often, clothes shown in films lead to cheap imitations in the market. When asked if there’s a downside, she replied, “I don’t know if that’s the downside. The way I see it, there are people who cannot probably afford higher fashion or expensive fabric but they still desire to look like actors on screen.
