CHENNAI , MAY 01,
C.A. Bhavani Devi hopes the sabre silver medal she won at the Tournoi World Cup Satellite fencing championship in Reykjavik recently would bring more attention to the sport in the country. In fact, Bhavani had won gold at the same event last year to become the first Indian to do so in an international event.
The Tamil Nadu fencer, who went down 15-10 to USA’s Alexis Browne in the final, had beaten Guila Arpino (Italy) 15-10 in the semifinals and Parede Torres (Venezuela) 15-9 in the quarterfinals.
Speaking to The Hindu, Bhavani said: “I was happy to be in the final again. My focus and control were fine like last year. The final saw me making unforced errors and there were a few lapses. I will now go back and analyse how I can improve in the coming months as competition in [Asian Games] Jakarta is bound to be fierce.”
Bhavani is of the view that fencing is on the right track, but still has a long way to go. “I hope my medal puts the sport in the limelight,” she said.
