JAMMU, May 05:
The hosts, Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Bantalab dominated the 19th edition of Jammu District Sport Climbing competition winning nine medals, including three gold and as many silver in the two-day event which was organised by Mountaineering Association of J&K (MAJK).
While the budding climbers of the school swept all the medals in the Sub Junior Girls category, they also won a gold each in Sub Junior Boys and Junior Girls events.
However, in the Mini Girls category, climbers of St. Xavier Convent School, led by Tanisha Rakwal, swept all the medals to emerge as a force to reckon with in the new crop of climbers.
However, the titles in four other categories were shared by four different institutions.
Whereas Kashish of Shining Star High School, Muthi won in the Mini Boys category, Rahul Sharma of SOS Hermann Gmeiner School and Shuvam Mehara of Government Model School Domana were the winners in Junior Boys and Men’s categories respectively.
It is worth mentioning here that this year Zonal medalists of Jammu district were not allowed to participate in this competition so as to pave way for the budding climbers to come up. The move paid rich dividends as a new crop of talented climbers completely dominated the 2- day Championship.
In the valedictory function, Zorawar Singh Jamwal, Chairman Team Jammu was the chief guest who along with Rahul Sharma, Chairman of Sprawling Buds ICSE School and Arti Sharma, Principal of Apple Kids School, Bantalab gave away medals to the winners.
Prominent among others present included general secretary and joint secretary of MAJK, Ram Khajuria and Shawetica Khajuria respectivley, Sonam Sidharth, joint secretary of Tawi Trekkers J&K, Deepika Dutta and Sakshi Magotra, both trained mountaineers and State level Judges; Ajay Deep Singh, top climber of India in the Boys category, Mrityunjay Sharma, an international climber, Shilpa Charak, a national climber and national medalists Arun Deep Singh, Ritesh Sharma and Satish Bhan, a sports organizer.
The championship in which about 300 boys and girls participated was inauguratedon the first day by Nagendra Singh Jamwal, Chief Executive Officer of Surinsar Mansar Development Authority. This championship was sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
Meanwhile, the Udhampur, Reasi and Samba District Sport Climbing Competitions have been postponed due to certain unavoidable reasons and shall start after a couple of days.
