IMFA conducts workshop on Kathak Dance

JAMMU, Oct 23:
Noted Kathak maestro, Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj and his son Pt. Tribhuwan Maharaj along with Maharaj’s disciples conducted one-day Kathak Workshop at Institute of
Music and Fine Arts (IMFA), University of Jammu (JU), here today.
The students of Music Department of the IMFA were benefit of the demonstrated tips of the intricacies of Kathak with the emphasis on Mudras, expressiveness, Rasas and dramatization.
Earlier, Prof. Satnam Kour, formally welcomed Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj and Pt. Tribhuwan Maharaj.
Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj is the son and disciple of Pt. Briju Maharaj, a world class Kathak master and
belongs to Kalka- Bindadin Kathak Gharana of Lucknow Gharana. He has performed solo performances of Kathak across the world. He has given a number of performances under his Guru Pt. Briju Maharaj.
He has given Dance Direction in films also. Yash Chopra’s Hindi feature film, ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ is one among them. He is the recipient of Business and Entertainment Award, Bharat Icon Award, Gaurav Award, Mexican Youth Award etc. Presently, he works as a Senior Guru at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi and imparting training to the students of Kathak.
An interaction session was also conducted after the demonstration. The students and faculty members interacted with both the visiting guests.
Dr. Priya Dutta, HoD Kathak Department coordinated the event. She also extended the vote of thanks.
Kathak exponents will give a performance tomorrow at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, JU at 3.00 pm as a part of Golden Jubilee Celebrations of JU.
