Jammu University organizes seminar on social exclusion and marginal communities

The Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP), University of Jammu organized a two day national seminar on “Social Exclusion and Marginal Communities: Challenges of Deprivation and Discrimination in Northern India”. The inaugural function was held at Brig. Rajinder Singh Auditorium , University of Jammu.
Prof. Paramjeet Singh Judge, a renowned sociologist from Guru Nanak Dev University, Punjab was the keynote speaker. In his key note address he highlighted the evolution of placing minorities, ST/SCs and reservation system in Constitution of India since independence. Prof. Balwinder Singh Tiwana, Punjabi University, Patiala, was the Chief Guest for the occasion and in his address he focused on Economic dimensions of social exclusions. Prof. J. R. Panda, former HOD, Department of Sociology, who had been instrumental in introducing sociology as a subject at the school +2, college and in the University of Jammu was felicitated for his contribution in enlarging the scope of sociology.
Prof. R. D. Sharma, Vice-Chancellor, University of Jammu in his presidential remarks congratulated Prof. Jasbir Singh for organizing such seminar which is need of the time. He further called upon the intellectual community to devise ways and means to end the exclusion of communities due to various categorizations. He further called upon to take up case studies to substantiate the theoretical perspectives on social exclusion. sInaugural session was followed by “Kavi Ghoshti” which was chaired by Prof. Anita Billawaria, Dean, Social Sciences, University of Jammu in which invited dogri poets MrsVijaya Thakur, Shri Kamaljeet Chaudhary, Shrimati Usha Kiran, Shri Krishan Kumar Sharma and Swami Antar Neerav recited their poems on the theme of social exclusion. Two technical sessions based on the theme of “Conceptualizing Discrimination, Exclusion and Inclusion based on Caste, Ethnicity and Religion” and “Religious Minorities and Deprivation/ Dalit discourse and Discrimination” were conducted in which 20 papers were presented. Technical session 1 was chaired by Prof Gurjeet Kour and co-chaired by Dr. Sarabjeet Singh. Technical session 2 was chaired by Dr. Hema Gandotra and co-chaired by Dr. Jasdeep Singh Toor. Nine technical sessions based on different themes will be conducted on second day of the seminar followed by valedictory address in which Prof. R. K. Mahajan will be the chief guest and Prof. R. L. Bhat will deliver the key note address. The function is to be presided over by Prof. Jigar Mohammad, Dear Research Studies. In all there are 117 research papers received for presentation in two day conference.
