Taranjit Singh Tony, senior Congress leader and DDC member Suchetgarh, has strongly criticized the Jammu Development Authority (JDA) for its encroachment drive, alleging that it disproportionately targets small and economically disadvantaged individuals while overlooking more influential violators.
Tony expressed his deep concern over the demolition of a house belonging to Harvinder Kaur, which had stood for nearly 40 years. He highlighted the inconsistency in the JDA’s actions, noting that while the house was demolished, an adjoining small shop on the same land was left untouched. “At the very least, the JDA should have served a notice before taking such drastic action,” Tony asserted. “If you cannot provide jobs to poor people, then you have no right to snatch the houses constructed on small chunk of land,” Tony stated, underscoring the government’s responsibility to protect the livelihoods and homes of its citizens.
Harvinder Kaur has condemned the government’s actions, expressing profound anguish over the demolition of her nearly 40-year-old home by the Jammu Development Authority (JDA). She lamented that, despite the long-standing nature of her residence, no prior notice was served before the demolition, leaving her and her family in a state of shock and uncertainty. She emphasized that such actions against the disadvantaged are unjust and called for the authorities to adopt a more humane approach in their operations.
In addition to these incidents, Tony criticized the authorities for their handling of the situation in Nai Basti, where shopkeepers have been adversely affected by the construction of an upcoming flyover. He also highlighted the plight of 29 airport residents who have yet to be rehabilitated, calling for immediate action to address their grievances.
Tony issued a stern warning to the JDA, demanding an immediate halt to actions that unfairly target the poor.
He urged the authorities to adopt a more humane and just approach in their operations, ensuring that the rights and livelihoods of marginalized communities are safeguarded.
