J&K Climbers excel with four medals

JAMMU, April 27:

J&K climbers held the state flag flying high during the IMF All India Speed Climbing and Bouldering competition winning two gold and two silver medals. The national ranking competition held at Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF), New Delhi. Whereas Ajay Deep Singh won two gold medals in Speed Climbing and Bouldering in the Boys category, Shivani Charak bagged two silver medals in the women’s category.

Now, after the first competition, Ajay Deep Singh, who collected 200 points, and Shivani, with 170 points, have emerged top ranked climbers of the country in the Boys and Women’s category.

Another climber in the Boys category, Arun Deep Singh, who secured fourth rank in both Speed climbing and Bouldering, ranked third in the country with 110 points.

Other notable performances were given by Mrityunjay Sharma who secured 10th position in speed climbing in the Men’s category, Asma Gul who secured 10th and 11th position in the Bouldering and Speed competitions respectively. Shilpa finished at Number 12 both in Bouldering and Speed Climbing. For all other climbers, who were on their maiden national competition, it was a huge exposure and learning experience to compete with national and international climbers.

It may be mentioned here that Mountaineering Association had selected 12 climbers including eight girls for participation in the national competition. However, five  climbers including Shivani Charak, Mrityunjay Sharma, Ajay Deep Singh, Arun Deep Singh and Asma Gul, who were deputed to Delhi on nine days coaching and practice at the international standard climbing walls in the IMF complex, just prior to the competition at the same venue.

The remaining seven climbers, Manisha Kumari, Raghni Devi, Roshni Devi, Vishali Sharma and Reema Devi in the Women’s category and Keshwam Dev Singh in the Sub Junior Boys category had strenuous work outs for nine days at Tenzing Norgay Sport Climbing wall in the Sprawling Buds ICSE School campus, Bantalab, Jammu under the supervision of Shilpa Charak, a senior climber, before their departure for Delhi.

On their return from Delhi, both Shivani and Ajay Deep Singh along with Ram Khajuria, general secretary and Shawetica Khajuria, joint secretary of MAJK called on the Secretary JKSSC, Dr Nassem Javaid Choudhary. The Secretary congratulated the climbers for their magnificent achievements in the national competition and hoped that both the climbers would bring more laurels to the state and the country.

Prominent among others present on the occasion included, Joginder Pal, Executive Engineer and Ravi Singh, Divisional Sports Officer, J&K State Sports Council. The state team for the national competition was sponsored by JKSSC.
