Jammu Municipal Corporation signed MOU with Indian Pollution Control Association (IPCA) around two years ago to implement plastic waste management and make Jammu a plastic-free city. In reference to which, Indian Pollution Control Association was supposed to set-up a Material Recovery Facility (MRF) in Jammu city for which Jammu Municipal Corporation has provided land, shed, electricity, etc.
The inauguration of the MRF was done by Sh. Chandermohan Gupta, Mayor, Jammu and Ms. Avny Lavasa, IAS, Commissioner, JMC in presence of Dy. Mayor Adv. Purnima Sharma, Chairman Health and Sanitation Standing Committee Sh. Narinder Singh, Chairman Swachh Bharat Standing Committee Sh. Yashpaul Sharma, Ms. Tinna Mahajan, Secretary, JMC, Ashish Jain, Director, IPCA, and Ranvir Singh, Project Coordinator, IPCA.
Shri Chandermohan Gupta, Mayor, Jammu said that, “Such initiatives and centre is the need of an hour to manage the menance of plastic waste in the city. With help of many such centers we can increase the rate of collection and segregation of plastic waste and provide solution to the MLP waste.”
Ms. Avny Lavasa, IAS, Commissioner, JMC said that, “Through today’s event we intend to promote decentralised waste management and create awareness among the people. MRF will handle 5 MT per day of plastic waste, which would be collected from individual households and rag pickers. JMC with IPCA will also conduct capacity building program to increase the capacity of rag pickers so that they would collect segregate and earn more.”
In the end event was concluded by Mr. Ashish Jain, Founder and Director, IPCA stating that the idea behind Material Recovery Facility (MRF) is to install Hydraulic balers, IPCA has planned to arrange collection of plastic waste at its own, further on, the plastic waste will be segregated into different categories and will compact it through its baler. IPCA will help different plastic waste reach separate recyclers and home processors.
