In a significant legal victory, the Delhi High Court on Friday granted interim protection to veteran Bollywood actor Kajol Devgan, safeguarding her personality rights against unauthorised and harmful use of her identity, including in artificial intelligence-generated content. A bench of Justice Jyoti Singh passed an ad-interim injunction restraining several defendants from using Kajol’s name, image, voice, likeness or other personal attributes for commercial purposes without her consent. This includes merchandise, posters or promotional materials that exploit her identity for profit. The court also directed the immediate removal of obscene, pornographic and defamatory material circulating online that misuses the actor’s persona. Judges have underscored that while legitimate uses such as satire, commentary and news reporting remain protected, clear limits exist when someone’s identity is exploited for unauthorised commercial gain or degrading content.
