Dr Thiagarajan with a personal experience of more than 1300 liver transplants added that the incidence of liver failure as well liver cancers is on the rise in India. Now there are more than 100,000 new liver cancer cases annually, resulting in more than 50,000 deaths. Both primary liver tumors (originating from liver cells, also called hepatocellular carcinoma, cholangiocarcinoma), and secondary tumors of the liver (liver metastases or spread from other cancers like colon cancer) can be treated by liver surgery or trans-plantation if they are detected, and managed early. The main reasons for liver cirrhosis are hepatitis B or C, alcoholic liver disease, or more recently, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.
Explaining the devastating effects of alcohol on the human body, he said that nearly 20 per cent of liver failures were due to alcohol consumption and women are more prone to liver damage from drinking alcohol than men
Dr Sujeet Saha said acute liver failure can occur over just a few days,in Hepatitis A, Hepatitis E etc,which is fatal unless an emergency liver transplant is carried out. At Medanta we have facility to airlift sick patients with acute liver failure and offer them life-saving liver transplant within 24 hours.
