Kharge Blames Amit Shah for Pahalgam Security Lapse
New Delhi, July 29 :
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi tore apart the BJP-led NDA government in Parliament on Tuesday, launching a no-holds-barred attack on the government for its ‘diplomatic and strategic failure’ to expose the machinations of Pakistan globally during ‘Operation Sindoor.’
Gandhi said all that the government wanted to do was to save the image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who has the “blood of Phalgam in his hands”.
“If Narendra Modi has 50 per cent of the courage of Indira Gandhi, who sailed the country through a period of crisis during the 1971 Bangladesh War, he must admit his government’s lapse during Operation Sindoor,” Gandhi said in the Parliament.
The Congress leader also picked holes in India’s foreign policy. “Not a single word of condemnation was uttered against Pakistan for promoting terrorism by any country in the world. Operation Sindoor exposed PM Modi’s foreign policy bankruptcy. Countries’ only terrorism was condemned. Asim Munir was having lunch with Donald Trump. Why didn’t the Indian government raise objections to the high-profile meeting at the White House? Rahul questioned.
To substantiate his claim, the Congress leader drew a comparison between the 1971 war era and the Operation Sindoor period, stressing India’s war tactics and diplomatic manoeuvres in Indira Gandhi’s era were far more superior as compared to Narendra Modi’s time.

hands were tied by the government,” Rahul said.He also criticised Rajnath Singh for his Parliament confession that the government never wanted to attack the military infrastructure of Pakistan. “We don’t want escalation. These are the words of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. His words exposed a lack of political will and a flaw in tactical manoeuvre,” he added.
‘Sindoor exposes lack of political will, operational flaw’
He said the 1971 victory against Pakistan saw the surrender of over 100,000 Pakistani soldiers. “In 1971, the political will was clear, and the Armed Forces had full operational freedom. Today, you can’t even decide whether to escalate or de-escalate a situation after striking.”
The Congress leader highlighted a critical moment after the airstrike at 1:05 AM, where, just 30 minutes later, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh reportedly reached out to Pakistan, signaling a reluctance to escalate. “Why tell Pakistan at 1:35 AM that we don’t want escalation? The Air Force executed its job, but the political leadership failed to follow through.”
‘Trump credit, India’s meekness’
Taking aim at US President Donald Trump, Rahul said the US President had claimed credit for a ceasefire 29 times. The Congress also warned about the growing military ties between Pakistan and China. “Pakistan’s Air Force is now attached to China’s. Together, they are feeding battlefield intelligence. India’s foreign policy failure is letting China and Pakistan fuse militarily. The consequences will be catastrophic.”
He continued, “What happens when the next terror attack occurs? This government is clueless about deterrence and political will. You’ve allowed terrorists to operate freely. India needs a leader who gives the forces the freedom they deserve.”
Gandhi concluded his speech with a stern warning about the country’s future. He said, “India must not become a battlefield for large powers. This isn’t about politics or PR. The armed forces are above that. We need leadership that respects the forces, and isn’t distracted by short-term political gain.”
A politically charged atmosphere was witnessed in the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday as Leader of Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge squarely blamed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the security lapse that led to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, demanding immediate accountability from the Centre.
Speaking at the Monsoon Session of the Parliament, Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge held Home Minister Amit Shah responsible for the “security lapse” which led to the Pahalgam terror attack, and demanded that accountability be fixed.
Kharge, who was speaking during the special discussion on ‘Operation Sindoor’ in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in the Upper House, attacked the BJP-led NDA government and took a swipe at PM Narendra Modi’s unscheduled visit to Pakistan in 2015.
Kharge said the prime minister should have been present at the all-party meet instead of campaigning in Bihar, and questioned Modi’s sincerity towards national security.
He also demanded accountability and said the government should admit its ‘lapses’ and ‘failure’ in stopping terror attacks. He asked if Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor’s statement on security lapses was aimed at ‘saving’ the home minister. He was citing Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha’s statement.
“Jammu Kashmir LG Manoj Sinha himself admitted that Pahalgam was a security lapse, and what happened in Pahalgam was unfortunate; innocent people were brutally killed. (Sinha said) I take all responsibility for the incident. However, the home minister must take responsibility for the security lapse, not the LG,” Kharge said.
Congress President and LoP Kharge accused the Modi government of being arrogant and not responding to letters by the opposition. Mallikarjun Kharge demanded an apology from Union Minister and Leader of the House in the Rajya Sabha, JP Nadda, for calling him mental. Nadda took back his words and apologised.
