Mountaineering Association of J&K (MAJK) today released its calendar of activities for the Year 2019-20 in a simple but impressive function held at K L Saigal Hall, Abhinav Theatre, here today.
Highlighting the activities to be undertaken by the Association and its affiliated clubs this year general secretary of the Association, Ram Khajuria mentioned that this year the Association shall organize 11 trekking expeditions, three specialized sport climbing coaching camps for potential National medal winners, two Sport Climbing courses, a sport climbing coaching cum competition for specially abled children.
As also four preparatory camps before participation of the state team in the Zonal and National climbing competitions besides a Judges and Route Setters Course. To spot the talent at the grass root level the Association aims to train about 1000 sport climbers by organizing coaching cum competitions for school students throughout the year.
The Association shall also host the 7th Junior/Sub Junior North Zone Sport Climbing Championship at Jammu besides participating in the 4th North Zone Women Sport Climbing Competition to be organized at IMF, New Delhi and participating in the Zonal/National Sport Climbing Competitions and conducting the State Championship and 14 district climbing competitions.
The chief guest, Ashwani Sharma (former MLA) along with Nagendra Singh Jamwal (Chief Executive Officer Surinsar Mansar Development Authority); S. Bhattacharjee (Chairman, Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee, New Delhi), Prof Lalit Magotra (president, Dogri Sanstha, Jammu); Zorawar Singh Jamwal (general secretary, Press Club, Jammu); Sanjeet Khajuria (former Dy. Director, Doordarshan Kendra, Jammu) and Prem Sadotra general secretary, J&K High Court Bar Association, Jammu) released the calendar in the presence of heads of various institutions and members of the Association and affiliated clubs.
The highlight of this year’s major activity shall be a prestigious Mountaineering Expedition to Kang Yissay Peak in Ladakh in which the team would attempt two other peaks also in the same area besides some other small mountaineering expeditions to be conducted by the affiliated clubs.
Whereas district Sport Climbing Competitions of Kashmir division shall be held at climbing wall at TRC, Nowgam (Kashmir) the district competitions of Jammu Division shall be conducted by the Association at Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Bantalab, Jammu.
While releasing the calendar of activities the chief guest, Ashwani Sharma hoped that this year our climbers would bring more laurels to the state in all the forthcoming Sport Climbing Competitions. He also congratulated Shivani Charak for her splendid achievements and promised her all possible facilities for her full preparation for the forthcoming national and international competitions and hoped that she would bring more laurels to the state and the country by winning a medal at the international level. The Guest of Honour, Nagendra Singh Jamwal, while speaking on the occasion, appreciated the role of the Association in promoting adventure activities in this part of the country and invited the Association to organize trekking expeditions in Bani- Sarthal area and Seoj Dhar-Kailash Kund area. He also advised the Association to organize a mountaineering expedition to Brahma peak in Kishatwar area for which sponsorship can be considered.
Earlier, Shawetica Khajuria, Joint Secretary of the Association highlighted the achievements of the Association during the year 2018-19. The function was very ably anchored by Deepika Dutta, a mountaineer.
Prominent among others present included, Dr. C K Khajuria; Vivek Chauhan, (Administrator, Oriental Academy); Mitra Ghosh (a national judge in sport climbing), Yogeshwar Kumar and Khurshid Ahmad ( both vice presidents of the Association, Sumit Khajuria, a veteran mountaineer, Hari Krishan Dhar, Principal Shastri Memorial School; Sonam Sidharth, Rakesh Goswami and Sushil Singh, members of the Association and Shivani Charak, an international sport climber.
