Modi likely to take oath Saturday, submits resignation

\The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) unanimously passed a resolution to elect Narendra Modi as their leader. Twenty-one NDA leaders signed a letter to elect Narendra Modi as their leader during a key meeting held at his official residence in Delhi on Wednesday.
During the meeting, the NDA leaders congratulated the Prime Minister for his leadership and the strides made by the nation under him in the last 10 years.
They appreciated the efforts made by the Prime Minister in nation-building, highlighting that he has a clear vision for ‘Viksit Bharat’ and that they are partners in this goal.
“In the last 10 years, 140 crore citizens of India have seen the country develop in every sector due to the welfare policies of the NDA government under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After a very long gap, of almost 6 decades, the people of India have chosen a powerful leader with an absolute majority for the third consecutive time,” the NDA leaders’ letter mentioned.
“We are all proud that the NDA fought and won the 2024 Lok Sabha elections unitedly under the leadership of Narendra Modi. We NDA leaders unanimously choose Narendra Modi as our leader,” it further stated.
The leaders asserted that the NDA government, under the leadership of Modi, is committed to serving the poor, women, youth, farmers, and the exploited, deprived, and oppressed citizens of India.
NDA leaders lauded the Prime Minister’s efforts towards poverty eradication and pledged to continue the good work.
“The NDA government will continue to work to improve the living standards of every person in India and the all-round development of the country by protecting the heritage of India,” it added.
The crucial meeting of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance was held at Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s residence in Delhi on Wednesday.
The meeting was attended by BJP president JP Nadda, BJP leaders Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh, and the BJP’s allies, including Janata Dal (United) chief Nitish Kumar,

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) supremo N Chandrababu Naidu, Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy, Janasena Party chief Pawan Kalyan, Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan, Nationalist Congress Party (Ajit Pawar faction) leader Praful Patel, among others.
According to sources, discussions were held on government formation by the NDA.
The NDA leaders will meet President Droupadi Murmu after a meeting with the newly elected members of the Lok Sabha scheduled for June 7. The sources added that Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Nadda will hold a meeting with the allies to discuss government formation.
PM Modi will take the oath for the third time on June 8, sources said.
The participation of Naidu and Nitish Kumar in the meeting is a significant step, as the support of their parties is crucial for the BJP to form a government. This time, the BJP fell 32 seats short of the majority mark of 272 and will need to rely on its allies to form a government.
As per the results announced by the Election Commission of India on Tuesday, the BJP won 240 seats and the Congress 99 seats. BJP had won 303 seats in the 2019 general elections and 282 seats in the 2014 general elections.
Meanwhile, President Droupadi Murmu dissolved the 17th Lok Sabha on Wednesday after the recommendation of the Union Cabinet.
“The President accepted the advice of the Cabinet on June 5, 2024, and signed the Order dissolving the 17th Lok Sabha in the exercise of the powers conferred upon her by Sub-Clause (2) of Article 85 of the Constitution,” a statement issued by the Rashtrapati Bhavan said on Wednesday.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi tendered his resignation along with his Council of Ministers to President Murmu. The President accepted the resignation and requested that the Prime Minister and his Council of Ministers continue until the new government assumes office.
Also, a meeting of the opposition coalition, INDIA bloc was held in Delhi on Wednesday evening. INC president Mallikarjun Kharge said that leaders of the alliance will be meeting to discuss the election results and strategy thereafter.
Narendra Modi will likely be sworn in as Prime Minister on June 8 evening for a rare third term replicating Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru’s feat as the only other PM to do so. Modi’s new innings at the helm will also be his first as the head of a coalition with his party BJP lacking a majority of its own.
During his long stint as Gujarat Chief Minister and in the first two terms as Prime Minister, he always had the advantage of the BJP having a clear-cut majority.
With the BJP-led NDA achieving a majority in the Lok Sabha on Tuesday, the prime minister met President Droupadi Murmu and submitted his resignation on Wednesday.
The Union Cabinet has recommended the dissolution of the 17th Lok Sabha. The new cabinet will also be sworn in on June 8.
“The President has accepted the resignation and requested Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers to continue till the new government assumes office,” a Rashtrapati Bhavan communique said.
Earlier in the day a meeting of the Union Cabinet was held at the PM’s residence, where Modi discussed the results of the Lok Sabha elections and the formation of the new government after the NDA secured a majority.
This was the last meeting of the Modi 2.0 cabinet and council of ministers.The term of the 17th Lok Sabha ends June 16.
The BJP and its allies have won 292 seats. The BJP bagged 240 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, the votes of which were counted on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is scheduled to meet in Delhi during the day.The meeting chaired by the Prime Minister is expected to chalk out the next strategy in forming the government.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Chief N Chandrababu Naidu and Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde will be present at the NDA meeting.The opposition INDIA bloc, which won 234 seats, will also meet later in the day.
The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders will meet President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday evening and stake claim to form the government for the third time, sources said.
As per party sources, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and other leaders of NDA will meet Murmu and put forth the coalition’s claim.
Meanwhile, the NDA meeting is underway at the Prime Minister’s residence here to chalk out the next strategy in government formation. The NDA partners have secured 292 seats, 20 more than the majority mark of 272.
NDA leaders including Shah, TDP Chief Chandrababu Naidu, Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) head Nitish Kumar, and his party leader Lallan Singh will also be present. BJP stalwarts Nitin Gadkari, Rajnath Singh will also take part in the deliberations.
Earlier, Chandrababu Naidu told the media: “We are in NDA. I am going for an NDA meeting. In course of time, if there is anything we will report to you.”
In Andhra Pradesh, the TDP won 16 out of 25 Lok Sabha seats while the JDU bagged 12 of the 40 seats in Bihar.
The BJP fell short of a majority of its own this time and secured only 240 Lok Sabha seats. The majority mark is 272 in the 543-member Lok Sabha.
