Being a celebrity doesn’t protect one from patriarchy or societal expectations, as Bollywood actress Nimrat Kaur discovered when she started her career in the film industry. In a recent conversation, Nimrat shared that her family didn’t view her acting career as serious until she starred alongside Irrfan Khan in The Lunchbox. She revealed that, prior to that, her family believed she was just enjoying a “hobby” and expected her to eventually return home, get married, and “settle down.”In an interview with News18, Nimrat shared, “My work and I were finally taken seriously because there was Irrfan in the project. Prior to that, they said that shaadi ka time aa gaya hai. Those marriage questions stopped after The Lunchbox. It took that film to convince (and) showed them what I was capable of.” Nimrat confessed that she wants to take her time with marriage, choosing instead to focus on herself and her career. She also shared her belief that marriage isn’t necessarily the key to feeling “settled,” as she observes many relationships around her that appear inauthentic.
