As part of the nationwide Swachhata Pakhwada 4.0 initiative, the NSS units of GGM Science College organized an extensive cleanliness drive along the banks of River Tawi. In collaboration with the NGO ‘Live for Others- Being Helpful,’ this event took place on the auspicious occasions of Durga Ashtami and Vijaydashami, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The drive emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship and a collective responsibility to reduce pollution in natural water bodies which was carried under the guidance of Principal Prof. (Dr.) Romesh Kumar Gupta, with active involvement from NSS Programme Officers Dr. Rahul Kait and Dr. Neha Sharma, the NSS volunteers worked in designated shifts alongside Samar, Secretary (Environment domain) of the partnering NGO. The volunteers not only engaged in the cleanliness drive but also conducted an awareness campaign to educate the public on the harmful effects of plastic pollution on aquatic ecosystems.In their interaction with devotees at the river, NSS volunteers highlighted the dangers of plastic waste to the river ecosystem. Volunteers collected plastic items from devotees, ensuring their safe disposal to prevent further contamination of the river. This combined effort supported the cleanliness of River Tawi while fostering community awareness on sustainable practices and the reduction of single-use plastics.Addressing the gathering on the occassion, Principal Prof. (Dr.) Romesh Kumar Gupta underscored the pivotal role of youth in environmental preservation. He commended the NSS units for their dedication to creating a cleaner, greener society and urged them to continue championing such initiatives that positively impact the environment. The event concluded with a pledge by all participants to uphold the cleanliness of River Tawi and to adopt eco-friendly practices in their everyday lives. This cleanliness drive thus marked one of many activities under Swachhata Pakhwada 4.0, a nationwide initiative that promoted values of cleanliness, responsibility, and environmental awareness.
