POONCH, July 24:
After facing undue delays because of some litigations and misunderstanding between two departments of Education and Sports, the historical 1935 school in the Poonch town has finally got the modern Hockey Astroturf.
The foundation stone for the state of the art sports facility, the second in Jammu Province with first being at K K Hakhu Stadium in Jammu, will be laid by the first citizen of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, Lt. Governor, Girish Chandra Murmu tomorrow morning.
The Rs 5.32 crore Astroturf Stadium will be set up on the front ground of the Government Model Boys Higher Secondary School, Poonch, just adjoining Sports Stadium, Poonch.
With the laying of Astroturf at the border district, a long pending demand of hockey lovers of Poonch has been met by the Government. The Centrally sponsored project is being constructed under the special scheme of augmentation of sports infrastructure in Jammu and Kashmir.
The demand for modern hockey facility was projected at different level by former SAI Hockey coach and an active member of Hockey J&K, Sham Lal Sharma, who, however, could not live long to see the town getting the dream project. Sham Lal died in a tragic road accident on way back to Poonch from a National event.
Important to mention here that the project is being constructed by the Department of Youth Services and Sports (DYSS) in collaboration with the Department of School Education.
