To design a perfect curriculum of a Certificate/Diploma course in Applied Mathematics being started by the Department of Mathematics, the Department organized One day Workshop on ” Applied Mathematics”. About 80 students and scholars from the Departments of Computer Science, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics, Mathematics and Economics participated in the Workshop.
Prof. R.K. Sharma from IIT Delhi, Prof. R.K. Mohanty from South Asian University, Delhi, Prof S. Pirzada from University of Kashmir, Prof. Lalit Sen Sharma from University of Jammu and Dr. Vikas Kumar Sharma from Thaper Institute of Technology were the Resource Persons at the workshop.
The Workshop was inaugurated by Prof. Rahul Gupta former Dean of Mathematical Sciences and Director HRDC, University of Jammu, after a welcome address by Prof. Romesh Kumar, HOD Mathematics.
In the academic deliberations Prof. Mohanty spoke on Partial Differential Equations and their applications, and Prof. Pirzada talked about Graph Theory and its applications.
Prof. Manoj Dhar, Vice Chancellor, University of Jammu, being the source and motivation of organizing such events under RUSA and having special interest in Mathematics and its applications in other disciplines of Sciences participated in a special session on “Skill Enhancement courses on Applied Mathematics” and took an active part in the deliberations.
Prof. Dhar called upon the participants to be updated not only with the curriculum but also with all the developments taking place around and also stressed on the interdisciplinary nature of the programmes.
He further said that since mathematics is applicable in almost all the areas, everyone should have at least a basic knowledge of mathematics.
His Motivational Lecture on the subject was inspiring and spoke about his learning experiences about applications of Mathematics and Statistics in Bio Sciences and Bio Technology in particular.
In the post lunch session, Dr Vikas Sharma talked on Optimization Theory and its applications, and Prof. R.K. Sharma delivered a lecture on RSA and Beyond. The final lecture was delivered by Prof. Lalit Sen Sharma on Computer Graphics.
Besides scholars, Prof. S.D. Sharma, Prof. Bhopinder Singh, Prof. D.S. Jamwal, Prof. K. S. Charak, Dr. Shallu Sharma, Dr. Tirth Ram, Dr. Vijay Shivgotra, Dr. Sunil Kumar Bhougal, and Teachers from city Colleges/ Cluster University of Jammu took an active part in the discussions and deliberations which will prove very beneficial in designing the desired course.
