JAMMU, Oct 24:
Kathak performances designed by and under the guidance of noted Kathak maestro Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj, performed by Pt. Tribhuwan Maharaj and his disciples at General Zorawar Singh Auditorium, here today.
The programme was organized by Institute of Music and Fine Arts (IMFA) to commemorate the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of the JU. Dean Academic Affairs, JU, Prof Keshav Sharma was the chief guest. A large number of artists, musicians, dancers and students were present in the auditorium to see the performances. Innovative and experimental forms of Kathak were presented during the programme.
Principal, IMFA, Prof. Satnam Kour formally welcomed the distinguished gathering.
The performances of Kathak included ‘Kranashah’ involving factor of moving ahead and chronology, was presented by dancers, Damini Bisht, Priyamvada Singh, Ashwini Soni, Akash Dwivedi and Tribhuwan Maharaj.
‘Megh Malhar’ having three Alaap sequences ‘Barkha Ritu Aaye’, ‘Badra
Ghir Aaye Chahun Dishan’ and ‘Ummad Ghummad Garjat Nabh Badal Ghir Aaye’, representing varying moods was performed by the dancers Damini Bisht, Shrishti Junnarkar, Sree Bandhupadhaya, Sangeeta Dastidar and Ashwini Soni.
A documentary on the life and work of Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj was also screened on this occasion.
Prof. Keshav Sharma appreciated the conduct of such performances at Jammu where internationally acclaimed artists like Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj and party gave live performances.
Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj also expressed his views on his journey of Kathak and he also threw light
on the experimental and innovative performances being presented in the days to come.
It may be mentioned here that Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj is the son and disciple of Padam Vibhushan
Pt. Briju Maharaj, a world class Kathak master. He belongs to Kalka- Bindadin Kathak Gharana of Lucknow
Gharana.
Presently, he works as a Senior Guru at Kathak Kendra, New Delhi and imparting training to the students of Kathak there.
Portraits prepared by Ankush Kumar and Aziz Verma of Fine Arts Department of IMFA were
presented to Pt. Jai Kishan Maharaj on this occasion.
Raj Kumar conducted the proceedings of the programme while Dr. Priya Dutta coordinated the
event and also extended the vote of thanks.
