New Delhi, Nov 30 : Facing backlash back home for praising Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan during the recently-held Kartarpur ceremony, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday hit back at his critics saying that it was Congress president Rahul Gandhi who sent him there for attending the event.
The Punjab Minister’s Pakistan visit for the foundation stone laying ceremony of the Kartarpur Sahib corridor had led to differences with Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. When asked about the CM’s disapproval of his Pakistan trip, Sidhu said: “Rahul Gandhi is my captain. It is he who sent me to Pakistan.”
CM Singh had tried to dissuade Sidhu, a member of his cabinet, following a grenade attack on a religious gathering in Amritsar that left three people dead, but he paid no heed. Singh had blamed Pakistan’s ISI for the attack.
However, he also described the Punjab CM as a “father figure” to him. The Congress leader also said that 50-100 Congress leaders patted him on his back for the visit.
