Jammu, Dec 18 :
As many as six persons, including former Deputy Superintendent of Police, have died of asphyxiation and four others fell unconscious when a fire broke out under mysterious conditions in a house in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir.
Police here on Wednesday said that a fire broke out last night under mysterious circumstances in the house of retired DySP Avtar Krishan (81) in Shiv Nagar area of Kathua.
“Six people have died in the incident due to suffocation while four others fell unconscious and admitted to the hospital,” said police.
Authorities in the Government Medical College and Hospital, Kathua, said apparenty asphyxiation was the cause of deaths, including four minors.
Police have registered a case and started the investigation.
The deceased as per the police are identified as Ganga Bhagat, 17, daughter of Bharat Bhushan, Danish Bhagat,15, son of Bharat Bhushan, residents of Shaheedi Chowk, Avtar Krishan, 81, son of Keshav Raina (81) resident of Ward No. 16, Shiv Nagar, Kathua, his daughter Barkha Raina, 25, son Takash Raina,3, and Advik Raina,4, son of Sandeep Kaul, resident of Jagti Nagrota, Jammu.
Meanwhile, injured are Swarna,61, wife of Avtar Krishna, resident of Shiv Nagar, Kathua, Neetu,40, wife of Bharat Bhushan , resident of Shahidi Chowk,

Kathua, Arun Kumar,15, son of Sain Chand, resident of Batote, Ramban and
Kewal Krishan, 69, son of Mansa Ram, resident of Shiv Nagar Kathua.
Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh, who is Member Parliament, Kathua constituency posted on X, “Deeply shocked to learn about the accidental death of six members of a family resulting from fire incident in the Shiv Nagar area of #Kathua city.”
“My sincere condolences to the bereaved family and prayers for the speedy recovery of the injured. I am in constant touch with the district administration. Our team of BJP workers led by Mandal President, Rahul is assisting on the spot. Om Shanti,” he posted.
Meanwhile , Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha expressed sadness over the loss of lives in a tragic fire incident occurred in Kathua district of Jammu and Kashmir. In a condolence message, the Lt Governor said: “Extremely saddened by the loss of lives due to a tragic fire in Kathua. My thoughts are with the bereaved families. I wish the injured a speedy recovery”.
Meanwhile, The Chief Minister Omar Abdullah today expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of six lives in a devastating fire incident in Kathua district.
In his condolence message, the Chief Minister described the incident as deeply painful, particularly as it claimed the lives of six people and injuring another four.
“It is heartbreaking to learn about this tragedy where six precious lives were lost. I pray for eternal peace to the departed souls and for the swift recovery of those injured in this unfortunate incident,” he said.
The Chief Minister extended his heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved families, praying for strength and forbearance to help them endure this difficult time.
The fire, which broke out early Wednesday morning in a rented accommodation, led to the death of six individuals, including two minors, due to suffocation.
The victims were rushed to the Government Medical College (GMC) Hospital in Kathua, where they were declared ‘brought dead.’
Four others injured in the incident are currently undergoing treatment.
The Chief Minister assured that the best possible medical care is being provided to the injured.
“I have directed the concerned authorities to ensure that the injured receive best possible treatment for a smooth recovery,” he said.
