The second group of Tawi Trekkers J&K, comprising 41 students including 23 girls of Shangrilla Public School, Jammu, today left for Mongri under the supervision of Shashi Kant Sharma, a trained mountaineer, to participate in the J&K Himalayan Trekking Programme being organised by the club in the sylvan surroundings of beautiful Moungri hills in Udhampur district.
Two teachers of the school, Ranjana Gandotra and Vandana Manhas also accompanied the group of trekkers whose average age was 13 years.
The group was flagged off by Principal of Shangrilla Public school, Surestha Khajuria in the presence of president, Ram Khajuria; general secretary, Shawetica Khajuria and joint secretary of Tawi Trekkers J&K, Sonam Sidharth.
Important to mention here that Himalayan Trekking Programme started by the club in 1990 for school students in order to ‘catch them young”. The programme has been very popular among students and during the last 28 years over 12000 boy and girls have participated in this activity.
This year, the programme is being organised in cooperation with Directorate of Tourism, Jammu, J&K Police, J&K State Sports Council, Mountaineering Association of J&K and Indian Mountaineering Foundation North Zone Committee, New Delhi.
