Six Jaish terrorists in Punjab, heading towards Delhi: Counter Intelligence warns

Punjab has been put on high alert after the counter-intelligence wing of Punjab Police on Thursday informed about the presence of six-seven terrorists belonging to Pakistan-based proscribed group Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) in the state. A letter issued by the Counter Intelligence Inspector General said the terrorists were planning to cross over to Delhi and suggested that the ultras might have entered India from international border in Ferozepur area. “At least six to seven terrorists are reportedly in Punjab (possibly Ferozepur area) and planning to move towards Delhi from Punjab side,” the letter marked to all security establishments and police officers said. The letter also asked the authorities to immediately mount checkpoints at all important points and routes and conduct strict vehicular checking. “There is a need to mount strong nakas at all important points and routes, conduct strict vehicular checking and take suitable countermeasures for all sensitive locations in your area. Force be suitably sensitised and alerted,” the note said. The intelligence alert comes after four men carjacked an Innova taxi from its driver at gunpoint near Madhopur area in Punjab’s Pathankot district early Wednesday, sparking fears of a Pathankot airbase-like attack that took place in 2016, where seven people were killed. Security has already been tightened in Pathankot from Wednesday and nearby areas following the incident. The letter by the Counter Intelligence Inspector General also asked the relevant security agencies to strengthen the second line of defence along the Indo-Pakistan border and coordinate with the BSF. “All supervisory field officers, including IGP/DIG Ranges and CPs, are advised to involve in the planning and implementation of the preventive and precautionary measures. Prior to the Pathankot attack, heavily-armed terrorists in Army uniform sprayed bullets on a moving bus in Gurdaspur bordering Pakistan in 2015 and stormed a police station, killing six people, including an SP, and injuring eight others. It was the first major terror strike in Punjab in eight years.
