Rajouri, June 9 :
Dr. Sushil Sharma whilst holding a day long health check up cum awareness camp under the guidance of Shri 1008 Mahamandaleshwar Swami Vishwatamanand Ji at S.V.S Degree College for Women, Rajouri town during the culmination of weeklong Sri Bhagwad Katha highlighted the interplay between religion, spirituality and health, and their significant role in people’s overall well being. The camp was inaugurated by Swami Ji amidst Vedic invocations emphasising let’s all be disease free. More than 2000 patients were screened, evaluated and sensitised for various health ailments. Blood sugar, ECG tests were performed and medicines were also given as per the requirements. While interacting with the patients and attendees gathered for the awareness camp, Dr. Sushil maintained that like spirituality, health is also a multi-faceted concept and thus open to numerous explanations and definitions. However, growing evidence suggests the relationship of spirituality with physical, mental, emotional, social and vocational well-being. Spiritual health, thus, permeates and integrates all the major dimensions of health. It is a dynamic state of being, reflected in the quality of relationships that people have in up to four domains of spiritual well being. Personal domain where a person inter-relates with self , Communal domain with in-depth inter-personal relationships, Environmental domain connecting with nature, and Transcendental domain relating to something or someone beyond the human level. It is important to highlight here that all these domains, though seems to be separate are actually inter related and instrumental in forming a model of well being with people at the core.
He maintained that although the emergence of spiritual behaviour starts with one’s inner self but it too requires intervention by some external agency. Pointing especially towards the role that can be played by spiritual leaders in this part of the state where inhabitants are largely unaware about various health issues, he emphasised the need to channelize the vision and teachings of such religious personalities for promoting healthy behaviour among the common populace. He underlined that these religious leaders possess extraordinary credibility and influence in promoting healthy behaviours by virtue of their association with time-honoured religious traditions and the status which affords them-as well as their communication skills, powers of persuasion, mastery over religious texts that espouse the virtues of healthy living, Through such actions, religious leaders can be effective agents in promoting critical change in these areas.
