Hosts Sprawling Buds ICSE School, Jammu dominated the first day of the 19th Jammu District Sport Climbing competition got underway here today.
While Sania Sharma and Sunandini Bhagat of the host school won girls’ gold and silver medals respectively, two climbers of the same institution, Nandini Dhar and Mansi Parihar clinched the first two positions in the Sub Junior category. The bronze medals in these two categories went to Kashish Sharma of St. Xavier Convent School, Barnai and Narmita Rajput of Shining Star Academy, Muthi.
Meanwhile, in Sub Junior Boys category, record number of 67 climbers took part. While nine of them topped the 40ft high Climbing wall, other two have also entered the final. Similarly, in Boys (40 participants) and Mini Boys (107 participants) nine and 17 boys have entered the final round. In Mini Girls, nine climbers, with Ridhima Sharma of Shangrilla Public School leading, performed well to enter the final round. The finals of all the categories along with competitions in the men and women categories shall be held tomorrow.
Earlier, the championship, wherein around 300 young climbers are participating, was declared open by Chief Executive Officer, Surinsar Mansar Development Authority, Nagendra Singh Jamwal in the presence of Ram Khajuria (Secretary, IMF, North Zone Committee), Yogeshwar Kumar (vice president, Jammu), Shawetica Khajuria (joint secretary Mountaineering Association of J&K (MAJK), Chairman Rahul Sharma and Director Arti Sharma of Sprawling Buds ICSE School and Sumit Khajuria (a senior mountaineer). Speaking on the occasion, chief guest assured all possible help and cooperation for further promotion of the game in J&K. He also congratulated the climbers for the inclusion of Sport climbing in the next Olympic at Tokyo in 2020. Prominent among others present included Ambreen Fatima, Sakshi Magotra and Deepika Dutta, both mountaineers and sport climbing Judges, Fazal Ahmad, Sudershan Singh, Anju slathia, Usha Devi and Satish Bhan, a sports organizer.
This two-day championship is being organized by MAJK and sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
