Punjabi films mostly revolve around comedy and music but there are filmmakers who don’t shy away from trying out different things and new genres. Director Simerjit Singh is such a brave director who likes to do experiments. After tasting the success and garnering appreciation for his previous releases Simerjit Singh has once again proven that he can surely feel the pulse of today’s audience.
Subedar Joginder Singh is a story of a brave soldier of Indian Army named Subedar Joginder Singh (Gippy Grewal) and his battalion Sikh Regiment, who fought with Chinese Army and protected the nation till his last breath. Subedar Joginder Singh served the British Indian Army pre-independence and later in the Indian Army. He fought for the independence of the nation and then fought to keep that independence intact and before achieving martyrdom he fought for the honor of India, in 1962 when China infiltrated in the country with evil intentions. It was due to the sheer mental strength that despite the exhausting ammunition and being hit by a bullet on the thigh, Subedar Joginder Singh kept motivating his soldiers against all odds, along with that he single-handedly killed dozens of Chinese soldiers with Bayonets. The Government of India honored him with the highest wartime gallantry award, Param Vir Chakra posthumously. Gippy Grewal essayed the character of the martyr. To essay, the character with perfection Gippy underwent a rigorous training and gained the look of the martyr.
Other than Gippy Grewal film also features Roshan Prince, Kulwinder Billa, Aditi Sharma, Rajvir Jawanda, Karamjit Anmol, Sardar Sohi, Guggu Gill, Charan Singh, Loveleen Kaur Sasan, Nirmal Rishi, Jordan Sandhu, Baninderjit Singh (Bunny), Harish Verma, Raghveer Boli, Jaggi Singh, Sharan Maan. All the actors played their parts brilliantly.
The music of the film has already won many hearts and almost all songs of the film have managed to win accolades. ‘Gal Dil Di’, ‘Naina’ and ‘Hathyar’ are most popular among all. Subedar Joginder Singh is war drama film and gives the real feel the film has been shot in Kargil, Drass, and Rajasthan. The cinematography is brilliant. Though Punjabi Cinema has yet to explore VFX, still it was impressive.
The film can be a masterpiece if the editor Bunty Nagi has done a little more work as at some places we felt that film is a bit stretched. Unexpected songs at unwanted times could have been avoided. But these flaws can be ignored. Overall it’s great war film which can bring tears to your eyes and you’ll feel motivated and you will come out of the cinema feeling patriotic.
