District Development Commissioner Sushma Chauhan today convened a meeting with the officials to discuss modalities for implementation of Swachhta Hi Seva campaign in the district to mobilise communities to make the district Plastic free.
ASP Headquarters, Principals from degree colleges, representatives from Jammu University and SKUAST Jammu, Assistant Commissioner Development Jammu, Programme Officer, ICDS, SDM, DPO, Administrator Auquaf, District Social Welfare Officer, Deputy Chief Education Officer, all BDOs, CDPOs besides all district and senior officers were present in the meeting.
During the meeting, the DDC emphasised for ensuring maximum awareness among public about the harmful effects of plastic use especially the single use plastic which is emerging as one of the leading reasons for environment degradation and pollution. DDC said that the main objective of the campaign is to discourage the use of polythene carry- bags and the single use plastic. She asked officials to involve communities both urban and rural and put special focus on involving students for successful execution of this campaign. ‘For community engagement, organise special activities like rallies, painting and quiz competitions, sanitation drives at educational institutions, religious places, markets, parks besides focusing on rural engagement by way of PRIs’, she added.
The officers shared their views on the challenges and potential solutions of Plastic waste and disposal of plastic waste on scientific lines. During the campaign, preparation and awareness generation will be organised from September 11 to October 01, 2019, while collection of plastic waste will be conducted on Oct 2, 2019 and disposal of plastic waste on scientific lines will commence from October 3 and continue till October 27, 2019.
