The ‘Swarnim Vijay Mashaal’ lit by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi at the National War Memorial on Wednesday to mark the 50th-anniversary of the 1971 India-Pakistan war on 16 Dec 2020. Four ‘Victory Mashaals’ (flames) lit from the Eternal Flame of National War Memorial are being carried to various parts of the country including villages of Gallant warriors and Gallantry Medals awardees of 1971 war. The Nation is celebrating 50 Years of India-Pak War, also called ‘Swarnim Vijay Varsh’. Various commemorative events are being conducted pan-India wherein war ‘Veterans and Veer Naris’ are felicitated. Events like band displays, seminars, exhibitions, equipment displays, film festivals, conclave and adventure activities that were planned are now within constraints of Carona restrictions. ‘Swarnim Vijay Mashaal’ lit by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was received by Col Dr Virendra K Sahi, VrC, Director, War Decorated India for J&K and Ladakh, at a meticulous function organized by Army at the entry point of Jammu near Kaluchak. Vijay Diwas is celebrated every year on December 16 to mark India’s triumph in liberating Bangladesh from Pakistan in 1971. In one of the fastest and shortest campaigns of military history, a new nation Bangladesh was born as a result of the swift campaign undertaken by the Indian Army.
After facing a historical defeat in the 1971 war, the then Chief of Pakistan Army General Amir Abdullah Khan Niazi, along with his 93,000 troops, surrendered to Indian Army.
