Despite Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) clarification, there are few takers of the Rs 10 coins amid rising concerns over which ones are real or which ones aren’t. As a result of this, banks are now running short of space to store these Rs 10 coins.
In January this year, the RBI had issued a notification saying: “It has come to the notice of the Reserve Bank that in certain places there is reluctance on part of traders and members of public to accept Rs 10 coins due to suspicion about their genuineness.”
“So far the Reserve Bank has issued Rs 10 coin in 14 designs…All these coins are legal tender and can be accepted for transactions,” the central bank added.
Here’s all you need to know about the 14 types of Rs 10 coins issued so far by RBI:
1. The latest Rs 10 coin was introduced last year in June to commemorate the occasion of “150th Birth Anniversary of Shrimad Rajchandra”
Front: The Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar is at the centre along with the rupee symbol and denominational value “10” in numerics below the Lion Capitol.
Back: The portrait of “Shrimad Rajchandra” is at the centre. The year “1867” and “1901” in numerics are written on the left and right side of the portrait of Shrimad Rajchandra.
2. In April 2017, a batch of Rs 10 coins were introduced to commemorate the occasion of “One Hundred Twenty-fifth Year of National Archives of India”
Front: The front is almost similar to the pattern mentioned above.
Back: The image of “National Archives Building” is at the centre, with inscription “125 years” below the image. A logo of 125th Anniversary Celebration is also there at the centre, above the image of “National Archives Building”.
3. In June 2016, Rs 10 coins were circulated to commemorate “Birth Centenary of Swami Chinmayananda”
Front: Similar to above mentioned pattern
Back: The reverse of the coin bears the portrait of “Swami Chinmayananda” at the centre. The year “2015” is written below the portrait in international numerals.
4. In January 2016, Rs 10 coins were issued to commemorate the occasion of “125th birth anniversary of Dr. BR Ambedkar”
Back: The reverse side of the coin bears the portrait of “Dr. B.R.Ambedkar” at the centre. The year “2015” is written in the international numerals below the portrait of Dr. BR Ambedkar.
5. In July 2015, Rs 10 coins were issued to commemorate “International Day of Yoga”
Back: The reverse side of the coin bears the logo of “International Day of Yoga”. The date “21 JUNE” is written at the bottom of the logo.
6. In April 2015, RBI issued Rs 10 coins to commemorate the occasion of “Centenary commemoration of Mahatma Gandhi’s return from South Africa”
7. In July 2014, the central bank issued Rs 10 coins to commemorate the occasion of “Diamond Jubilee of Coir Board” in 2014
8. In August 2013, the Reserve Bank issued Rs 10 coins to commemorate the occasion of “Silver Jubilee of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board”.
9. In June 2012, new Rs 10 coins were issued to commemorate the occasion of “60 years of the Parliament of India”
