Jammu, JUNE 23:
Expressing serious concern over the looming threat of urban flooding in Jammu, senior Congress leader and DDC Suchetgarh, Taranjit Singh Tony today called for immediate action to mitigate monsoon-related disasters, particularly in low-lying areas like Jeevan Nagar.
While interacting with a deputation here today, Tony revealed that the Jeevan Nagar bridge needs to be reconstructed due to serious structural issues stemming from its faulty design, which has posed a constant threat to commuters and nearby residents. He emphasized the need for comprehensive pre-monsoon preparations, warning that inaction could lead to a major civic crisis. Urging Deputy Chief Minister, who also holds the portfolio of the concerned ministry, Tony appealed for urgent directions to the UEED to undertake immediate desilting and cleaning of all major nallahs across Jammu before the onset of the monsoon. “As per the India Meteorological Department, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is expected in Jammu during this monsoon season. Without adequate pre-monsoon measures, areas like Jeevan Nagar will be at severe risk of flooding,” Tony cautioned, holding the civil administration accountable for any negligence in preparedness.
He further pointed out that several low-lying bridges in Jammu are poorly designed and pose serious safety hazards during the rainy season.
Tony specifically urged Bhupinder Kumar (IAS), Commissioner/Secretary PWD and Devansh Yadav, JMC Commissioner to personally intervene and direct immediate cleaning of the nallahs running through Channi, Trikuta Nagar, Nanak Nagar, Jeevan Nagar, Gaddi Garh, and Chatha areas, which are among the worst affected during rainfall.
“The failure to prepare in time will not only cause immense public hardship but also expose the lack of coordination between departments,” he added.
Tony demanded that all concerned departments gear up for monsoon preparedness without delay, ensuring public safety and infrastructure stability across Jammu.
