JAMMU, Sept 13:
Tushar Bhogia of Government Higher Secondary School, Domana emerged as the new lead climbing champion of J&K in the 18th J&K State Sport Climbing Championship which concluded at Sprawling Buds ICSE School, here today.
In a keen contest with Ishtiaq Ahmad and Mohd. Shaffi Bhat, both of Pulwama, Tushar kept his cool to emerge victorious. Ishtiaq and Mohd Shaffi had to contend with second and third position respectively.
First place in boys Lead event went to Mandeep Singh of St. Xavier Convent School, who displayed good technique and temperament to top the 40ft high wall to win. Jeevan of Government HSS Domana and Summanyu of St. Xavier Convent School also tried their best but could not top the wall and eventually finished second and third respectively.
In another good contest in Girls category, Mahi Devi and Natasha, both of Government HSS Domana and Sweaty of Shining Star High School, Muthi bagged the first three prizes respectively.
In the remaining four categories of Mini Boys and Mini Girls, Sub Junior Boys and Sub Junior Girls, the finals could not be completed as some of the finalists of these categories from Udhampur could not reach Jammu because of closure of Jammu- Udhampur highway.
However, final rounds of these categories shall be organized at a convenient date and results shall be announced accordingly.
A total of about 290 climbers from various districts of the state participated in the two day competition which was sponsored by J&K State Sports Council.
Mitra Ghosh, a national judge in Sport Climbing, was the President of Jury of the Competition who was well supported by technical personnel and logistics from IMF North Zone Committee, New Delhi. Shawetica Khajuria, an international Judge in Sport climbing, was the organizing secretary of the competition.
Chairman Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF) North Zone Committee, New Delhi, S. Bhattacharjee was the chief guest at the valedictory function who along with Arti Sharma, Principal of Apple Kids School and Mitra Ghosh, a national Judge, distributed medals and mementoes to the winners and participating institutions.
While addressing the audience, Bhattacharjee appreciated the performance of the climbers during the competition.
He exhorted the climbers to prepare for the forthcoming national competitions and Olympics in which sport climbing is now one of the disciplines.
Prominent among others present on the occasion included Ram Khajuria, general secretary and Sushil Singh, treasurer of Mountaineering Association of J&K, Shashi Kant, Sakshi Magotra, Shivani Charak, Sourav Deep Singh, Mrityunjay Sharma, Ajay Deep Singh and Arun Deep, all senior sport climbers.
