Officials of the Uttar Pradesh State Bridge Corporation were booked for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, after a portion of an under-construction flyover in Varanasi collapsed on Tuesday, leading to 18 deaths.
The FIR was lodged at the Sigra police station on Wednesday on the complaint of sub-inspector Dhananand Tripathi.
Though it does not name anyone, the FIR has listed the supervisory officials and contractors and staff appointed by them for various tasks, among the accused.
Sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 308 (attempt to commit culpable homicide) and 427 (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code have been invoked. Sections 3 and 4 of the Public Property Damage Prevention Act 1984 are also mentioned in the FIR.
Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya suspended four officials – chief project manager HC Tiwari, project manager K.R Sudan, and assistant Engineer Rajesh Singh and engineer Lal Chand – after holding them “prima facie” responsible for the incident.
