VC JU launches website of SBT JU

Prof. R.D. Sharma, Vice-chancellor, University of Jammu today launched the official website of the School of Biotechnology, University of Jammu, Jammu www.sbtju.in . Speaking on the occasion, Prof. Sharma said that in the present digital world, web profile of an institution gives first hand up-to-date information that is available on a click. The main aim of the website is to provide and keep the information about academic, research and other activities of the School updated.
He further added that it is a matter of great satisfaction that the School of Biotechnology is making sincere efforts to grow and achieve higher academic excellence. Vice-chancellor also suggested to link the website of the School to the University of Jammu website.
The School of Biotechnology, University of Jammu was established in December 1998 with major funding from the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Government of India. A major achievement of the School was its ranking as “A” by DBT, Govt. of India. The School of Biotechnology is housed in a state of art building which houses fully equipped research laboratories, In-situ hybridization facility, cell culture facility etc. The School has developed a well knit course curriculum which helps the students to gain placements in research institutions of national and international repute. The students of the School qualify national tests like NET (UGC-CSIR, ICMR), DBT-BET, GATE etc.
The School of Biotechnology has established a Next Generation Sequencing facility which is first of its kind in the J&K state. Efforts have been made for establishment of Animal Cell culture facilities for carrying out research related to animal biotechnology and immunology. “Green House” facility has also been established for maintaining and growing different plant varieties and high altitude plants.
The School of Biotechnology offers three Masters programmes in Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biochemistry, one PG diploma course in Bioinformatics besides M.Phil and Ph.D programmes in Biotechnology, Microbiology and Biochemistry.
The research areas offered by the School are varied, ranging from plant genomics, microbial genomics to cancer biology, fungal biotechnology, industrial enzymes, bioactive compounds, metagenomics and metabolomics. A wide-ranging research interests combined with excellent facilities and encouraging atmosphere provide an environment for enthusiastic exchange of ideas among researchers. The School has created a niche for itself at the National and International level. The School has collaborations with reputed institutions within and outside India.
On the occasion, the faculty members including Prof. Jyoti Vakhlu, Director, SBT, Prof. M. K. Dhar, Dr. B. K. Bajaj, Dr. Sanjana Kaul and Dr. Ritu Mahajan were also present.
