Lt Governor, Farooq Khan expresses grief over demise of former Union Min Prof. Chaman Lal
Jammu, May 18 :
Veteran BJP leader and former Union Minister Prof Chaman Lal Gupta on Tuesday died here at his residence after successfully recovering from COVID treatment.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also condoled the demise of the senior leader.
Prof Gupta,87, died after a prolonged illness days after undergoing successful treatment for Covid-19 at a hospital, a family member said. He is survived by two sons and a daughter. The Twitter handle of the PM while expressing condolences said that Chaman Lal Gupta Ji will be remembered for numerous community service efforts.
“He was a dedicated legislator and strengthened the BJP across Jammu and Kashmir. Pained by his demise. My thoughts are with his family and supporters in this hour of grief. Om Shanti,” the Prime Minister tweeted. However, a family member said that he was tested positive for Covid-19 on May 5 and returned from hospital on Sunday after successful treatment. His condition suddenly deteriorated in the wee hours on Tuesday and he breathed his last around 0510 hrs, he said. Born in Jammu on April 13, 1934, the BJP leader was not in good health for the last couple of years. Gupta became a member of the J&K Legislative Assembly for the first time in 1972 and again between 2008 and 2014. He was elected to the 11th Lok Sabha from Udhampur constituency of Jammu in 1996 and re-elected to 12th and 13th Lok Sabha in 1998 and 1999. September 1, 2001, Union Minister of State (independent charge), Ministry of Food Processing Industries (September 1, 2001 to June 30, 2002) and Union Minister of State for Defence (July 1, 2002 to 2004). An author of three books in Hindi and a two-time J&K BJP president, Gupta had completed his MSc from GGM Science College Jammu and Allahabad University (UP). The last rites will be performed later in the day. Meanwhile, Union Minister Dr Jitendra Singh also condoled the demise of the stalwart leader in a message on Twitter. ”Demise of Prof Gupta, who was an inspiration, found member of Bhartiya Jan Sangh and who strengthened the BJP, is a big loss. My condolences,” he tweeted. Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha also paid rich tributes to the departed leader and said he would be remembered for his immense contribution towards welfare of the people. “Deeply pained to hear about the passing away of former union minister, Prof Chaman Lal Gupta Ji. Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha has conveyed his heartfelt condolences on the sad demise of former Union Minister and senior political leader, Prof. Chaman Lal Gupta.

Meanwhile Advisor to Lieutenant Governor, Farooq Khan, has expressed profound grief and sorrow over the demise of veteran politician and prominent social figure, Professor Chaman Lal Gupta, who left for heavenly abode here today.
Advisor termed his end as a big loss to the political and social fraternity of the country in general and UT in particular. He recalled his long association with Professor Gupta saying that he was an articulate political leader who always fought for the cause of downtrodden and made a lasting contribution in the service of nation. He also remembered him as brilliant teacher, an epitome of love and affection, who always motivated his students with his teachings. His absence has left a void in the political, social and educational arena that cannot be filled up.
