Weather improves after Snowfall, but Temp stays below Freezing Point In Kashmir

The weather in the Kashmir Valley improved following recent snowfall, with a slight rise in night temperatures, although they remained below freezing, officials said.
The Meteorological Centre in Srinagar has predicted another spell of snowfall from January 3 to January 6. This is expected to bring light to moderate snowfall at several locations in the Kashmir division and scattered areas in the Jammu division.
“At a few higher reaches, there is a possibility of moderate to heavy snowfall during the period”, it said adding “there is possibility of light snow at isolated places during January 1 and 2 also”.
“The cold wave conditions will continue to prevail over the Kashmir valley till end of the year”, the MeT office said.
The MeT office has also issued an advisory stating that in view of snowfall, sub- freezing temperature and icy conditions over roads including plains/higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir, Tourists/travellers/Transporters are advised to follow Admin/Traffic advisory.
There is no let-up in icy cold weather conditions in Srinagar and other parts of Kashmir valley that have frozen major water bodies disrupting normal life.
The minimum temperature in Srinagar recorded during the intervening night of Saturday and Sunday at -0.2 °C against the -1.0 °C recorded a day ago. This was 2.4 °C above average for the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir during this period of season.
The ski resort of Gulmarg turned the coldest place with the minimum temperature plummeting further on Sunday and recorded at -8.5 °C against -5.9 °C a day ago. This was 2.6 °C below normal for the valley of meadows in north Kashmir.
Pahalgam in south Kashmir plunged to a low of -8.0°C on Sunday after snowfall against the -2.8°C recorded the previous night and it was 2.8°C below normal for the tourist spot.
Kokernag also in south Kashmir had a low of -1.8°C against the -1.5°C a day ago and it was 0.9°C above normal for the picnic spot of the valley during this period of the season.
Qazigund recorded at -0.4°C on Sunday against the -0.6°C the previous night. This was 2.3°C above normal for the gateway to Kashmir on Srinagar-Jammu National highway in South

Kashmir. The night temperature at the frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara in north Kashmir also witnessed a slight improvement and recorded at -1.0°C against the -1.2°C the previous night and this was 2.0°C above normal for the place during this period of the season, the MeT office said.
Kashmir University has postponed all exams scheduled for Monday in view of the inclement weather.
The information was shared by the varsity in a statement on Sunday.
The varsity spokesperson said fresh dates for the postponed papers will be notified later separately.
Kashmir received heavy snowfall on Friday and Saturday, resulting in some areas of the valley getting cut off.
While snow has been cleared from main highways and arterial roads, the work is still on in some of the remote areas of the Union Territory.
Ahead of the new year celebrations, the much anticipated winter sports season kickstarted in the world famous ski resort of Gulmarg in North Kashmir on Sunday, officials said.

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Gulmarg Development Authority (GDA) Tariq Hussain inaugurated the winter sports season in Gulmarg, marking the beginning of an exciting period for tourists and sports enthusiasts at the valley of meadows.

Gulmarg and other parts of Kashmir valley received heavy snowfall during the past few days much to the delight of the sports lovers and the tourists staying at the ski resort to celebrate the New Year and to enjoy the skiing events.

The CEO, accompanied by the officials from JK Cable Car Corporation, GDA, Tourism Department, Municipal Committee, and Tourist Police, conducted an extensive tour of Gulmarg, Gondola, and Kongdoori to ensure the safe upcoming winter sports events including skiing for the tourists and sports lovers.

Hussain during his visit also put through the famous “Baby skiing slop” for the sports lovers and tourists.

Soon after the “Baby Skiing slop” was inaugurated, the tourists and children undertook skiing on it with much happiness and fanfare.

He emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and providing hassle-free services to visiting tourists.

The CEO also interacted with the many stakeholders and tourists during his visit and emphasized to conduct the upcoming events at the ski resort without any trouble.

Gulmarg is abuzz with tourists who have thronged to the place from various parts of the country and a good number of international tourists have also come here to celebrate the New Year function besides to enjoy the skiing on the world famous skiing slopes.

The tourists described the place as a perfect one for holding winter sports events.
