TUNDURRU MAR 09,
As many as 92 women were reportedly dragged on the roads and subjected to caning and abuse before being arrested. The women staged a protest demanding the relocation of the proposed aqua food park in this small village near Narasapuram in West Godavari district on International Women’s Day on Wednesday.
Heavy police force prevented the women from taking out a rally in the village. The women raised slogans against the government and the police. They were firm on undertaking the protest, which they planned to express their strong opposition to the ?200-crore project that intended to process 3,000 tonnes of aqua produce a day.
Despite prohibitory orders in the villages, the women had decided to register their protest against what they termed “hazardous and life threatening” project.
Spread over 59 acres in this tail-end village of the Godavari canal, the proposed food park consumes 1.5 lakh litres of water a day, besides discharging effluents to the tune of 50,000 litres every day. The villagers fear acute shortage of irrigation water and possible health hazards due to the effluents.
