Smt. Shanti Gupta Centre for Women Studies (SSGCWS), MIER organized a one-day workshop on the theme “Advancing Gender Equality through CEDAW”. The resource person was Dr.MalvikaUpadhya, an eminent social scientist from Delhi. Dr.Renu Gupta, Vice-Chairperson MIER was the Guest of Honor. Dr. Adit Gupta, Principal MIER College, HODs of various departments of the College, the faculty and students of the UG and PG Deptt. attended the workshop.
In the welcome address, Dr.Rohnika Sharma; HoD UG Department, introduced Dr.MalvikaUpadhyaas an eminent social scientist who has served different educational institutions of national repute as an assistant professor and guest faculty. Her areas of interests in teaching and research are Economic Sociology, Sociology of Labour, Sociology of Stratification, Sociology of Kinship, and Sociology of Gender. She has a rich record of publications and presentations related to women’s issues.
The workshop was divided into two sessions. On the commencement of the workshop, Dr.Upadhya said that gender equality is essential for the achievement of human rights for all.
Women work two-thirds of the world’s working hours and produce half of the world’s food, yet they earn only 10% of the world’s income and own less than 1% of the world’s property. Therefore, to fight all forms of discrimination against women on an international platform, a convention for the elimination of discrimination against women (CEDAW) was set up by United Nations 1979.
Dr.Malvika comprehensively explained the structure of the convention which consists of six parts and thirty articles. She also elaborated on the areas of preview of the convention such as sex stereotype, political, economic, social, and cultural life of women, equality in marriage, etc.
In the second session, the resource person and the participants shared their real-life experiences in addition to many inspirational stories and provided strategies to eliminate discrimination against women.
Dr.Upadhya urged to break the long-drawn silence among women and to speak up for their rights and privileges.
The programme was conducted by Ms. ShewetaLangeh a B.Ed.semester 1ststudent. Mrs. Monika Rathore, Coordinator SSGCWSpresented a formal Vote of Thanks.
