New Delhi,oct 9
The Indian Army’s sporting contingent delivered its finest-ever performance at the Asian Games 2026, returning with a record 20 medals, 6 Gold, 8 Silver and 6 Bronze. The performance by 62 Army athletes across 15 disciplines made a significant contribution to India’s overall fourth-place finish and added several new chapters to the country’s sporting history, as per a release. The six Gold medals represent a 100 per cent increase over the Army’s Gold-medal tally at the 2022 Asian Games. Army athletes accounted for 23.52 per cent of India’s total medals, winning 20 of the country’s 85 medals, while their six Gold medals made up 29 per cent of India’s 21 Gold medals. The achievement is also a reflection of the sporting ecosystem that the Indian Army has built over the years. The process begins with identifying sporting talent and providing promising athletes the opportunity to develop within a structured environment. Athletes are then nurtured at specialised training nodes for different disciplines, with access to state-of-the-art facilities, specialised coaching, technical and scientific support, equipment, competition exposure and sustained motivation. The focus is not simply on finding talent, but on giving athletes the environment and support needed to turn potential into performance. This ecosystem allows sportspersons to train with purpose, compete at the highest level and continue their pursuit of excellence with the backing of the institution. The Army has a long and distinguished tradition of sporting excellence. Major Dhyan Chand, one of the greatest names in the history of Indian hockey, remains an enduring symbol of that legacy. In more recent times, athletes such as Lieutenant Colonel Neeraj Chopra have carried this tradition forward, reaching the highest levels of international athletics and bringing global recognition to Indian sport. The Indian Army’s success at the Asian Games 2026 resonates with the Chief of the Army Staff’s vision of VIJAY, placing the Yoddha at the centre of transformation.
