KVK Kathua Organizes “Khet Bachao Abhiyan” at Chak Gota Village to Promote Sustainable Crop Management

Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) Kathua organized a one-day training programme on “”Khet Bachao Abhiyan” at village Chak Gota, Kathua. The programme was conducted under the administrative control of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences & Technology of Jammu (SKUAST-J) and under the dynamic leadership of Dr. B.N. Tripathi, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, conceptualized under the excellent direction of Dr. Amrish Vaid, Director Extension, SKUAST-Jammu. The programme was attended by more than 50 participants comprising of students, youth and farm women. The campaign aimed at creating awareness regarding crop protection, integrated disease and pest management, soil health conservation, and adoption of scientific farming practices for enhancing agricultural productivity and sustainability. Addressing the gathering, Dr. Vishal Mahajan, Chief Scientist & Head, KVK Kathua, highlighted the importance of protecting agricultural fields from emerging challenges such as climate variability, pest outbreaks, and declining soil fertility. He emphasized the need for timely adoption of recommended agricultural technologies, balanced nutrient management, and integrated farming approaches to ensure higher productivity and profitability. Dr. Mahajan encouraged farmers to remain in regular contact with KVK experts for scientific guidance and technical support. Dr. Anamika Jamwal, Chief Scientist (Plant Pathology), delivered a detailed lecture on major crop diseases affecting seasonal crops in the region. She educated farmers about the identification of disease symptoms at an early stage, preventive measures, and integrated disease management practices. Dr. Jamwal stressed the judicious use of fungicides and advocated the adoption of cultural, biological, and eco-friendly methods for effective disease control. She also sensitized farmers regarding the importance of field sanitation, seed treatment, and resistant crop varieties in reducing disease incidence.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Narinder Paul, Scientist (Agricultural Extension Education), elaborated on the objectives of the Khet Bachao Abhiyan and the significance of extension services in bridging the gap between research and farming communities. He motivated participants to adopt and promote balanced inputs use in agriculture especially fertilizers and pesticides. He also discussed the role of community participation and collective efforts in ensuring sustainable agricultural development.
During the interactive session, participants shared their field-related problems and sought expert advice on disease management, nutrient deficiencies, crop diversification, and integrated pest management. The scientists addressed their queries and provided practical recommendations based on local agro-climatic conditions.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, wherein the participants appreciated the efforts of KVK Kathua in bringing scientific knowledge directly to the farming community. The experts reiterated their commitment to supporting farmers through regular advisory services, demonstrations, and awareness programmes aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector of the district.
